Storm Shelters

During tornadoes and severe weather, the City of Derby encourages residents to shelter in place if possible. Residents should create a storm plan in the event of severe weather. Part of the plan should include evacuation planning, which involves gathering things such as medications, insurance documents, clothing, bedding, bottled water and non-perishable food before the need to evacuate arises. Residents also need to consider plans for pets, including food and a kennel.

There are three public storm safe rooms in the city. (Derby Middle School shelter is not available at this time).

Fire Station #82 will always be open during a tornado warning. Residents who go there for shelter will gain access via firefighters at the station. If firefighters are on a call or unavailable residents should call 316-788-1557 and ask for storm shelter access at the station. 
   
The two church locations are opened based upon volunteer availability. The shelters will be opened in the event of a tornado warning where damage to the City of Derby appears imminent. Look for notifications of shelter openings at the following places:

Fire Station #82 - Always open during tornado warnings


1401 N. Rock Rd.
  • Storm safe room in the basement.
  • Park north of the fire station and enter the east door upstairs. There is a handicap accessible entrance on the west side.
  • Animals are allowed at this location and crates are available for use.

South Rock Christian Church - open based upon volunteer availability


900 S. Rock Rd.
  • Enter the church on the west side. 
  • Animals are not allowed.

Pleasantview Baptist Church - open based upon volunteer availability

1335 N. Buckner
  • Enter the church on the south side.
  • Animals are not allowed.

Derby Middle School

 - **This shelter is currently not available
801 E. Madison
  • Open NON-SCHOOL HOURS during tornado warnings.
  • Park on east side of gym and in football stadium parking lot. Enter auxiliary gym on east side. 
  • Animals are allowed.
