May is Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme is Connect, Create, Contribute, which encourages older adults and their communities to do just that. Communities that encourage the contributions of older adults are stronger.
By engaging and supporting all community members, we recognize that older adults play a key role in the vitality of our neighborhoods, networks, and lives. This year, we celebrate those who spent time raising families, building careers, and paving the way for generations to come. A generation of hard workers who helped build this country to what it is today, will spend their lifetimes giving back to their communities.
Older Americans continue to volunteer and serve their neighborhoods in many ways. Whether they mentor children, volunteer at a soup kitchen, senior center, or in the schools or library, each one deserves recognition for their commitment and time.
Older Americans Month also serves to raise awareness concerning elder abuse and neglect. As people age, the risk of abuse and neglect increases. We must be sure resources are in place to protect our older population from the risks of abuse and neglect. One way is to maintain involvement in community and social activities.
The Derby Senior Center offers many ways to keep seniors involved, active and connected to the community. Have you wanted to try something new, like playing an instrument, learning a new language, developing your computer skills or doing a creative activity like painting? Learning a new skill keeps your brain working and may protect you against dementia. Being able to adapt to change is important at any age but can be particularly important as you get older. Seeing friends and joining in with others can energize your life and create opportunities for new experiences.
Regular physical activity also has benefits. We have a number of exercise classes at all fitness levels to choose from at the Senior Center. Exercise can help you sleep better, stimulate your appetite and may reduce your risk of heart disease, dementia and falls. It also helps improve and maintain your strength and balance.
Everyone benefits when everyone participates. I encourage you to Connect, Create, and Contribute for stronger and more diverse communities this month and throughout the year.
