Go Red for Women

Posted on February 2, 2017 at 8:02 AM by Kristy Bansemer

While we normally encourage Derbyites to wear green on Fridays, on Feb. 3 how about wearing red? Why red? By wearing red, you will show your support for the American Heart Association’s annual observance to raise awareness about women’s heart health: Go Red for Women.

Do you have a special woman or two in your life? Your mom, daughter, best friend, sister or grandmother? One in three women dies of heart disease every year. That's more than from all forms of cancer combined. This startling fact should serve as a wake-up call for all of us.

There is good news though. Eighty percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Women are encouraged to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce that risk. The American Heart Association has a variety of resources for healthy eating, physical activity, weight management and more at https://healthyforgood.heart.org/.

Are there some changes you can make this year to improve your health? I’ve found that when I make changes, those changes are often mirrored by my family and even my close friends. Whether you are a caring husband, concerned friend or son or daughter, think about the women in your life and their heart health.

To show your support on Feb. 3, post a photo on your favorite social media page of you and others wearing your red. Use the hashtag #GoRedICT to help spread awareness. Together, we can make a difference.
