Get Better Service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. Have you met owners Susan & Sara and dogs Molly & Boo-Boo at Bittersweet? How about Ken and Nancy at Ken’s Printing?

Support Community Groups: Non-profit organizations receive on average 250% more support from smaller business owners than from large businesses. Local events and organizations are supported by Derby businesses through donations and sponsorships, and thousands of dollars in grants are awarded annually by the Derby Community Foundation through its Community Enrichment Grant for school events and public safety needs.

Buy Local Is Supporting Yourself Too: Studies show when you buy from an independent, locally-owned business, rather than a nationally-owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers, and farms, which continues to strengthen the economic base of the community. We have many home-based businesses, such as caterers and photographers along with scenic storefronts like Mary’s Unique Floral & Gifts and Perfect Petals.

Invest In Community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. One example is John and Linda Bode, owners of BRG Precision Products. Their business started in their home basement and now is located in the West End Business Park. BRG offers synchronized clock systems, world time zone clocks, moving message signs, safety and event timers, emergency mass notification systems, and electronic carillon church bells. These clock systems made in Derby can even be found in the White House!

Next time you head out to shop, consider purchasing produce at the Farmers Market on Saturday morning, meat from Sig’s Gourmet Butcher Shop, or pizza from your favorite family-owned establishment such as Pizza John’s or Talliano’s. Your local business community will thank you.
