National Night Out

Posted on July 21, 2017 at 11:11 AM by Kristy Bansemer

What’s on your calendar for the evening of Tuesday, August 1? National Night Out will be held at Rock River Rapids on August 1 at 6 – 9 p.m. Admission is free.
National Night Out
Got a question you’d like to ask a police officer? Police officers will be on hand to show you how to start a Neighborhood Watch in your neighborhood. Crime prevention experts will be able to share crime prevention tips for your home and property. Officers will show young children safety tips for bicycling and crossing the street. If you have an interest in how crime scene investigations are conducted, a member of our investigative team will demonstrate and answer questions.

Displays from McConnell AFB military police, the Derby Fire & Rescue smokehouse, the Derby Police crime scene van, a bicycle rodeo and more will be available for both adults and children to explore.

Did I mention the free ice cream and hotdogs?

National Night Out is a great opportunity for the community and police to recognize the importance of partnerships to create safer neighborhoods. The event emphasizes the need for police and citizens to work together to reduce crime. It is an excellent opportunity for citizens to see police as their neighbors, friends and approachable--not just someone in a uniform. And anyone considering a career in law enforcement is welcome to pick the brains of our officers and firefighters to learn about career opportunities.

In 1984, National Night Out was started by the National Association of Town Watch. The first event occurred in more than 400 communities and involved 2.5 million neighbors. The program has grown steadily over the years and occurs every August in Derby. The event is known nationally for its block parties, cookouts and neighbors and police getting to know each other in a friendly, positive environment.

So, come for the swimming or come for the conversation & learning…or come for both! I look forward to seeing you on August 1.
