My 2018 Crystal Ball

Posted on January 5, 2018 at 8:30 AM by Kristy Bansemer

So much for New Year’s resolutions; top 10 lists are more my speed. So, here are my top 10 predictions for Derby in 2018, according to my trusty crystal ball:

  1. The City will construct a new fire station at the corner of Madison Avenue and Woodlawn Blvd. It will replace the old station 81 on Market Street and provide for the needs of our firefighters for years to come.
  2. High Park ballfields will get new state-of-the-art lights.
  3. The City will invest time and money to identify opportunities to mitigate flooding along Spring Creek.
  4. Houses, quadplexes, senior housing and apartments will get built. The strong demand for residential options shows that people want to move to Derby and continue to live here through changes in their lives over the decades.
  5. New traffic signals will go up on Meadowlark at Triple Creek Drive and on Rock Road at Cambridge Street, thus improving safety for left-turners.
  6. Businesses will continue to invest in new and improved facilities in Derby to serve Derby residents and attract visitors for shopping, medical services and dining out.
  7. With help from Derby Public Schools and several churches, more emergency storm shelters will be available in Derby than ever before.
  8. The new and improved Madison Avenue will open east of the high school. Orange cones will go somewhere else!
  9. Field Station Dinosaurs will open, which means dinosaur lovers (around 3 to 11 years old) will think every day in Derby is like Christmas!
  10. History buffs and proud Derbyites will develop a book, a video and a schedule of events to celebrate the city’s 150th anniversary in 2019.
