It’s back to school time and that means a new routine, more traffic on the streets and students walking on sidewalks and cross walks. Here are a few things to think about as school begins.

Cross walks and school zones: The school zone lights begin flashing a week before school begins to prepare motorists for the change. Please give our kids extra time to cross the street and be on the look out for those who may not use the cross walks. Kids may not always make the best decisions, so adults need to be aware at all times.

Distracted driving: One of the most important things you can do as a motorist is to keep your eyes on the road and eliminate distractions. Eat breakfast, shave and put on your makeup at home. Wait to send text messages until you reach your destination.

School Resource Officers: Building a positive relationship between law enforcement and the youth is an essential function for Derby’s School Resource Officers. Daily interaction with the students gives our youth an opportunity to approach police officers and ask questions or for advice. These daily interactions provide a comfortable environment for School Resource Officers to interact with students. This interaction can build mutual respect, trust, and understanding between the student and law enforcement officers.
