The City of Derby is happy to announce that Warren Riverview Park has been recognized with the Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association (APWA) in the category of Small Cities/Rural Communities Structures.
Each year, the APWA presents the Public Works Projects of the Year awards to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects. This year’s winners will be recognized at APWA’s national conference in September.
“We are excited to receive this award for one of Derby’s premiere parks,” said Randy White, Mayor. “I applaud our city staff, PEC, Snodgrass Construction and all those who played a part in creating this one-of-a-kind park experience.”
In May 2019, this park was recognized by the Kansas Chapter of the APWA with the state’s Project of the Year Award for Small Cities/Rural Communities Structures.
Warren Riverview Park opened in October 2018 at the former City of Derby Public Works site, which sits on the bank of the Arkansas River. The design includes a commitment to sustainability. The parking lot drains to a bioswale, which filters stormwater runoff prior to entering the river. A spring discovered during construction was incorporated into the park and bioswale design to create a bog which enhances the plant diversity and wildlife habitat.
The design allows the park to take on water from the river during flood events. The different levels, or terraces, allow the park to continue to be usable as the water rises. The materials used at the park were chosen to withstand flooding. The park has been tested by a few flooding events already and has proven itself as the features functioned as designed.
The riverside park is oriented to older youth, with ropes and rock courses and easy access to the river. Other features include a canoe launch, all-access playground, covered shelter and 3,000 square foot special event facility called The Lodge that has incredible views up and down the Arkansas River.
The city worked with Professional Engineering Consultants, PA and Snodgrass and Sons Construction Co., Inc. on this award-winning project. Learn more about the park at DerbyKS.com/WarrenRiverviewPark or Facebook.com/WarrenRiverview.
