On Jan. 2, 2018, Dr. David and Krista Drake donated a bronze statue of a boy with his dog entitled “Aw Shucks” to the City of Derby for its planned new dog park at Decarsky Park on Rock Road at the south city limit. This gift will beautify the entrance to the dog park and add to the community’s collection of publicly displayed bronze statutes. The collection includes 18 bronzes and continues to grow.On Nov. 28, 2017, the City Council approved a master plan for the 63-acre park, which includes primarily ball fields with artificial turf infields and a state-of-the-art dog park featuring three yards. Platting and design work is currently in process. Construction of Phase 1 is expected to begin in summer 2018.Primary funding for the park is provided by the Derby Difference Sales Tax (half cent), which was approved by Derby voters in 2013 and is being collected from 2015 to 2024. Several amenities for the dog park are desired but are beyond the base funding available, so donations and grants are being requested.“Krista and David Drake are such pillars of the community,” said Mayor Randy White. “We couldn’t be more pleased with their donation and the atmosphere it will help provide at the new dog park.”Dr. David Drake, DVM, owns and operates Rainbow Valley Veterinary Clinic in Derby. Dr. Drake has been a board member of the Derby Community Foundation for many years, including in the late 1990s when the foundation began the community collection of bronze sculptures.Other features desired for the dog park and for which donations and grants are needed include the following:
