City Budget Development Begins
June 6, 2008

Preparation of the 2009 City of Derby budget is underway. On Tuesday, June 3, City department directors presented their plans and requests to the City Council in a four-hour evening workshop. These departmental requests are available in the Budget Workshop document.

At the July 8 City Council meeting, the City Manager will present her recommendations in the form of a balanced budget and will include a five-year Capital Improvements Plan. The Manager’s Recommended Budget will be available on the city’s website on July 6, with paper copies available for viewing at City Hall, the Senior Center, and the Derby Public Library.

Derby residents have the opportunity to comment on the budget at City Council meetings throughout June and July, as well as the official public hearing on the budget on August 12. Council meetings will be held on June 10, June 24, July 8, July 22 and culminating in the adoption of the budget on August 12.

Budget requests under consideration include the following:

  • Expansion of the hours of the Derby Dash public transportation program from the current hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Expansion of the street maintenance program.
  • Addition of staff to operate the new library.
  • Stormwater drainage improvements in several areas of the city.
  • Addition of police officers.
  • Extension of a main sewer line from Rock Road & Kay Street to the east to enable continued growth of the City with new houses.
  • Improvements at Garrett, High, Hand, and Stone Creek Parks as well as at Rock River Rapids Aquatic Park.

City Council meetings are held in the Council Chambers at City Hall at 611 Mulberry Road beginning at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. (Please note – the City Council is considering an ordinance to change the meeting time to 6:30 p.m. beginning July 8).
