2009 Recommended Budget Includes Lower Mill Levy
July 9, 2008

At the July 8 City Council meeting, the City Manager presented her recommendations in the form of a balanced budget and a five-year Capital Improvement Plan.

The operating budget for all funds, not including reserves, fund transfers and bond proceeds, is $33,049,771, which is 4.51% more than the 2008 revised budget of $31,624,371. A reduction in the rate of property taxation is recommended. The mill levy would decrease 1/4 of a mill, reducing the city’s levy from 48.155 to 47.905.

Budget recommendations include the following:

  • Expansion of the hours of the Derby Dash public transportation program from the current hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fees to ride the bus are recommended to increase from $1 to $2, effective January 1, 2009.
  • Expansion of the street maintenance program.
  • Addition of staff to operate the new library when it opens in the fourth quarter of 2009.
  • Stormwater drainage improvements in several areas of the city.
  • Addition of two police officers.
  • Extension of a main sewer line from Rock Road & Kay Street to the east to enable continued growth of the City.
  • Improvements at Garrett, High, Hand, and Stone Creek Parks as well as at Rock River Rapids Aquatic Park.
