Cooter Serving as New SRO at Derby Middle School
August 18, 2008

Police Officer Michael Cooter, a two-year member of the Derby Police Department, is serving as the new School Resource Officer at Derby Middle School.

Cooter’s responsibilities include teaching DARE to 5th grade students and a bullying/drug/gang awareness class to 7th grade students. As a new addition to the Community Education Division of the police department, he will assist with neighborhood watch, business watch, identi-kid and motorized scooter safety classes.

Cooter takes the place of SRO Miriam Lopez, who was reassigned to the high school to work alongside current SRO Brian Norris. The Derby School District budgeted for a second SRO at Derby High School for the 2008-2009 school year. In an agreement between the city and school district, the district pays half of the costs associated with the SROs at each school.
