Drunk Driving Enforcement Campaign Beings August 14
August 6, 2008

The annual drunk driving enforcement campaign, sponsored by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), will be held from August 14 through September 1. The new slogan for this year is “Drunk Driving. Over the limit. Under arrest.”

The Derby Police Department is among more than 100 law enforcement agencies across the state, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, who will have additional officers on area streets and highways to enforce all traffic laws, with an emphasis on impaired driving.

“Make sure you have a designated driver before traveling if you plan to consume alcohol,” said Derby Police Lt. Jimmy Queen. “And remember to buckle up and properly restrain children in child safety seats as an added protection against those who might not have a designated driver.”

Listed below are some statistics from the Kansas Department of Transportation:

  • On an average day in Kansas, six persons are killed or injured in alcohol-related accidents.
  • Alcohol-related accidents in Kansas cost citizens nearly $500 million annually in lost productivity, medical costs, property damage, and other expenditures. This does not include the millions of tax dollars spent annually on DUI enforcement, prosecution, intake, incarceration, monitoring, and drivers’ license hearings/suspensions.
  • Those involved in an alcohol-related crash (as a passenger or driver) are eight and a half times more likely to be killed and 25 times more likely to be injured than if you were involved in a non-alcohol related crash.
  • The ratio of death to injury in alcohol-related crashes is five times higher than that for non-alcohol related crashes.
