City of Derby News Release
Fire Station #1 Grand Re-Opening Scheduled for July 18
July 11, 2008
The City of Derby will host a Grand Re-Opening of Fire Station #1 at 128 W. Market Street on Friday, July 18 at 4:00 p.m. Mayor Dion Avello and members of the City Council will cut the ribbon celebrating the full-time staffing of the station, which was made possible by a federal grant. Congressman Todd Tiahrt will serve as special guest and speaker.
Fire Station #1 opened in 1988 and was renovated in early 2008 to accommodate full-time staffing. The station has a bunk room, dining area and day room. It is now staffed with two firefighters 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The station was previously only used by volunteer firefighters.
“The City is pleased to partner with the federal government to provide enhanced public safety to the people of Derby,” said Mayor Dion Avello. “24/7 staffing at Station #1 will improve response times for fire and medical calls to the south and west parts of the city.”
The Grand Re-Opening event will include free hot dogs and hamburgers, and the public is invited. Parking is available at the Derby Police & Courts Building located north of Fire Station #1, or on Main Street.
