City of Derby News Release
Derby Fire & Rescue Issues Ice Warning
January 15, 2010
As a safety precaution, Derby Fire & Rescue is advising citizens to stay off all frozen ponds. With the warmer temperatures, the ice is beginning to slowly melt, and the likelihood of a break in the ice is greater.
Ice seldom freezes uniformly. It may be four inches thick in one location and two inches thick in another. Also, there could be fountains and hoses that re-circulate the water under ice.
If there’s a break in the ice and you fall in, try to stay calm. Call for help or send someone to call 911 immediately. After you get out of the water, get to a warm, dry sheltered area.
If you have additional questions, call Derby Fire & Rescue at 788-5819. If you see someone on a pond in your neighborhood or at a city park, please report it by calling the Derby Police Department at 788-8888.
