City of Derby News Release

National Night Out Scheduled for August 5
July 23, 2008

The City of Derby would like to invite residents to Rock River Rapids, 1900 E. James, on Tuesday, August 5 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. for its annual National Night Out Celebration.

National Night Out is a unique drug and crime prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Here in Derby it’s a yearly reminder to residents to participate in a “going away party for neighborhood crime and drugs.”

This is a free event for all Derby residents, and will include free ice cream sandwiches to the first 200 attendees, courtesy of Derby Wal-Mart.

The Derby Police Department will have displays from the Special Operations Unit (weapons, ballistic gear and more), the crime scene van, and child safety seat checks. State Farm Insurance will sponsor a bike rodeo in the parking lot, and the Derby Fire & Rescue Department will be on hand to display its trucks.

McConnell Air Force Base Security Police will participate as well, displaying a police car, Humvee, and Special Operations gear and weapons. The McConnell police will hold a K-9 dog demonstration.

If you are having a block party in your neighborhood, please notify the Derby Police Department at least 48 hours in advance by calling 788-1557. The Police Department will provide barricades to ensure safety. Derby officers are typically available to attend neighborhood block parties, but due to the event at Rock River Rapids, officers will not be able to attend parties on August 5.

If you have questions, please call Lt. Jimmy Queen at 788-1557.
