City of Derby News Release
City Looking for Recycling/Trash Advisory Board Applicnats
May 29, 2008
Derby Mayor Dion Avello is looking for volunteers to serve on a new ad hoc advisory board. The mission of the board is to learn about options available to the City to franchise residential trash collection and recycling collection services and to make recommendations to the City Council about how to proceed.
Interested residents may pick up applications at City Hall, 611 Mulberry, or download the application. The application deadline is Monday, June 16 at 5:00 p.m. Call Carolyn at 788-1519 for more information.
Currently, Derby residents pay varying rates for their trash collection to several different private companies. Franchising means that on a given city street, one company’s truck would pick up all trash on the same day and another truck would pick up recyclable items. Rates would be evened out, meaning that some Derby residents will have lower trash bills.
“Under a franchise system, recycling would be easier and more economical,” said Mayor Avello. “I would also hope to get a citywide clean-up day when residents can put bulky items at the curb for no additional charge.”
Board meeting times will be determined based on the needs of members.
