Swaney Retires After 45-Year Career

Pat SwaneyPat Swaney, El Paso Water Company President, is retiring after 45 years of service to the City of Derby. The public is invited to attend a retirement reception to honor his service to the community on Wednesday, August 27 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at City Hall, 611 Mulberry Rd.

Swaney began his career with the El Paso Water Company in 1963, serving in various capacities before being named President in 1992. Swaney led the water company through many changes, including the transition to Wichita water in February 2004. During his career, the number of water customers (both residential and commercial) increased from 1,683 in 1963 to more than 8,200 in 2008.

Swaney has also been a long-time member of the Derby Volunteer Fire Department, now referred to as Derby Fire & Rescue. He joined the department in 1968 and currently serves as Assistant Fire Chief, a volunteer job he is not yet ready to give up. For his efforts with Derby Fire & Rescue, Swaney was named the 2008 Kansas State Firefighter of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization. He was also named the 2008 VFW Firefighter of the Year for the City of Derby.

Retirement plans include working around the house and learning how to hit a golf ball straight more than two times in a row. He has no plans to move elsewhere after he retires, rather he looks forward to enjoying his retirement and continuing his volunteer service in his hometown of Derby.
