Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is comprised of all the uniformed police services. The role of this division is to provide emergency law enforcement services to the citizens of Derby. Day-to-day operations include: emergency response to criminal activity, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, criminal investigation and reporting, crime prevention, and detection.

The division commander supervises all employees in this division and assists with planning and research, budget preparation, monitoring of the department’s records management system, and policy development.

Included in the Patrol Division are the Professional Standards Unit, Training Unit, Community Education Unit, and the Reserve Unit.
  • The Professional Standards Unit conducts investigations into citizen complaints and monitors use of force and traffic pursuits by police officers.
  • The Training Unit is a specially trained group of police officers responsible for teaching the latest in law enforcement tactics, officer safety, firearms, legal issues, and leadership. This unit is responsible for educating new police officers through the Field Training and Evaluation Program, a 14-week training program designed to impart the necessary skills to successfully protect and serve the citizens of Derby.
  • The Community Education Unit is comprised of four police officers responsible for crime prevention and education services for citizens. School Resources Officers are assigned to this unit as well.
  • The Reserve Unit is comprised of volunteers trained to serve in a limited capacity as law enforcement officers. This unit is called upon during staffing shortages and other instances such as parades and special events.
