Storm Shelters
During tornadoes and severe weather, the City of Derby encourages residents to shelter in place if possible. Residents should create a storm plan in the event of severe weather.

Part of the plan should include evacuation planning, which involves gathering things such as medications, insurance documents, clothing, bedding, bottled water and non-perishable food before the need to evacuate arises. Residents also need to consider plans for pets, including food and a kennel.

There are three public storm safe rooms in the city.

Fire Station #82
1401 N. Rock Rd.
  • Open during tornado warnings.
  • Storm safe room in the basement.
  • Park north of the fire station and enter the east door upstairs. There is a handicap accessible entrance on the west side.
  • Animals are allowed at this location and crates are available for use.

Pleasantview Baptist Church
1335 N. Buckner

  • Open for residents when a tornado warning is issued for Sedgwick County and includes the City of Derby.
  • Residents should enter the church on the south side.
  • Animals are not allowed at this location.

Woodlawn United Methodist Church
431 S. Woodlawn Blvd.

  • Open during tornado warnings.
  • Enter the church using the south door on the east side of the building. The basement is just inside the doors to the left.
  • Animals are not allowed at this location.
