2017 Council Election
With a seat up for election in each ward of the city, Derby residents have an opportunity in 2017 to file for election to serve on the City Council. The term of office is four years beginning in January 2018.

Registered voters living inside the city limits must file with the Sedgwick County Election Commissioner by noon on June 1, 2017. The election will be held November 7. City Council elections are non-partisan in nature, meaning candidates need not declare a political party.

Four positions are up for election, one in each ward (see map), and the following people currently serve on the City Council:

  • Ward I – Tom Keil (filed for election)
  • Ward II – Vaughn Nun (filed for election)
  • Ward III – Chuck Warren (not filing)
  • Ward IV – John McIntosh (filed for election)

Any registered voter residing within the city limits of Derby must file their candidacy at the Sedgwick County Election Commissioner’s Office in the Historic Sedgwick County Courthouse in downtown Wichita at 510 N. Main, Suite 101 (Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.). The filing fee is $20, or a petition with 25 signatures of qualified electors living in the council ward could be submitted.

Information about the election can be obtained at www.SedgwickCounty.org/elections or by calling 660.7100. Several forms are available on this county website and must be filled out, and one additional form must be obtained and signed in person at the Election commissioner’s Office.

If a primary is needed, it will be held August 1, 2017 to determine the candidates on the general election ballot. For the Derby City Council election, a primary election will be held August 1only if more than three people file for any given ward. The purpose of the primary election would be to narrow the field to two candidates for the November 7 election.

Due to changes in state law in 2015, city council and school board elections moved from April to November beginning in 2017.

The City Council meets twice a month on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. Information about serving on the city council is available at www.Derbyweb.com/Council or by contacting City Manager Kathy Sexton at or 788-3132.
