City of Derby News Release
2009 Fire Prevention Week
September 25, 2009
The Derby Fire & Rescue Department will conduct activities in observance of Fire Prevention Week October 4 through 13. The goal is to teach Derby’s youth fire safety and exit drills.
The program is designed for kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade children, but preschoolers will be involved as well. Derby firefighters will talk about home fire safety with the students, including why fire engines hold certain equipment, why firefighters wear special clothing and breathing equipment, and demonstrate items that can sometimes be scary to small children, such as masks and oxygen tanks.
“Lt. Chuck Stansfield and his crew have worked hard to prepare an outstanding week of fire prevention education for Derby’s schools,” said Fire Chief Brad Smith. “Each child will have an opportunity to participate in drills and receive materials that are relevant to the week’s activities.”
Students will also take a trip through the Smoke House, one of the best fire safety houses in the area, to learn what to do if there is a fire in the home. A non-toxic smoke is used to simulate an actual fire requiring escape.
