Derby Mayor Dion Avello served as a City Council member for 10 years before deciding to make a run for Mayor. He was elected in April 2003 and later re-elected in April 2007.
During his tenure, Mayor Avello has been instrumental in the opening of a regional water park, Rock River Rapids. He has led the City Council in establishing a Clean Indoor Air Ordinance, which takes effect on January 1, 2009. And, he has seen the City of Derby grow substantially both residentially and commercially.
Mayor Avello focuses on providing for the health, safety and overall well being of the community. His favorite area of government is economic development.
After attending Pace College in New York City for two years and working in sales for a period of time, Avello opened his own business, Acme Litho and Envelope Company in Wichita.
Avello is on the Wichita Airport Advisory Board, and a member of the Greater Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau and REAP (Regional Economic Area Partnership).
A native of Englewood, New Jersey, Avello is married to Sandy. They have two grown children and eight grandchildren.
