Economic Development Priorities

Warren-Riverview-Park
As a growing community, Derby is focused on encouraging business growth that fits the needs of our residents and businesses. We follow a multi-year economic development plan designed to guide our efforts to encourage that growth. There are four areas of emphasis for economic development staff: Business Retention, Expansion and Attraction; Small Business Development; Housing; and Marketing.

Business Retention, Expansion & Attraction

Supporting businesses already here and attracting new businesses into the community are crucial to long-term growth. From companies engaged in retail sales to those specializing in manufacturing, assisting businesses to help them grow represents a large part of economic development staff’s efforts.

Small Business Development

Due to past success in growing local businesses, placing emphasis on small business development and entrepreneurship skills is a priority. The Derby area is fortunate to have a wealth of resources devoted to helping small businesses, including the Kansas Small Business Development CenterNetwork Kansas and the South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD).

Housing

Known as a great place to live and work, Derby’s steadily growing housing market has been a source of pride for many years. With a wide range of housing options available across all price points, continued efforts to encourage new housing are an important part of economic development.

Marketing

Continuing to promote the community and its many assets is a key economic development function. As part of a larger metro area, whether you are seeking a place for your family, or a location for your business, growing Derby means #DerbyProud.
