Human Resources
Human Resources staff is committed to helping the City of Derby become an employer of choice. Our desire is to attract and retain honest, hard working and motivated employees who are committed to providing the highest quality of service to the citizens of Derby.
One way we work to be an employer of choice is by providing an Alternative Work Schedule (AWS) that provides employees an opportunity to request a work schedule that allows them to achieve work-life balance. The majority of requests are approved provided that they are not detrimental to meeting the needs of the City and the public we serve. In addition, the majority of employees who work at City Hall, the Senior Center, and in Municipal Court work a 4 ½ day schedule. These areas close at 1 p.m. on Fridays, allowing the City to provide longer hours of service Monday through Thursday which better meets the needs of citizens who work outside of the City and want to conduct business before or after their work.
Human Resources is responsible for ensuring compliance with labor laws, administering benefits, compensation and classification, training and development, safety, oversight of the wellness program, employee relations and policy development. Our goal is to recruit, develop, reward, and retain a diverse professional workforce and provide an equal opportunity for learning and personal growth.
New employees are welcomed through an on-boarding program that includes orientation, luncheon, review of performance expectations with supervisors, facility tours, and a buddy program to help new hires learn about our organization. We offer a competitive compensation and benefits program, and believe that by staying competitive we are able to attract and retain a high quality workforce that makes it possible for the City to continue to proclaim that Derby is “The Place to Be”.
The City of Derby is an equal opportunity employer. It is the policy of the City to provide all employees and job applicants an equal opportunity without discrimination based on age, sex, race, creed, color, national origin, veteran status, disability or any other condition or status protected by state and federal laws. For individuals with disabilities, applications materials will be made available in alternative formats upon request to the Director of Human Resources. The Kansas Relay Number may be used for those with hearing impairments at 1-800-766-3777.
