Pollution Prevention

Tips for Avoiding Stormwater Pollution

  • Don't litter.
  • Don’t dump anything except water into storm drains.
  • Take paint, chemicals, cleaners, fuels, pesticides, and hazardous waste to a household hazardous waste facility.
  • Don’t pour household products such as cleansers, beauty products, used motor oil and other auto fluids, paint, lawn care, or household chemicals on the ground or in storm drains.
  • Don’t pour any of the products listed above down the sink or flush them down the toilet.
  • Sweep driveways and sidewalks clean. Remove debris and residue that could end up in a storm drain from concrete and paved areas around your house.
  • Recycle yard debris or use it to make compost rather than raking it into streets where it can wash into storm sewers.
  • Keep your lawn clean by picking up pet waste on a regular basis. Waste washed into a storm drain goes directly into rivers, streams and lakes untreated.
  • Don't over water plants and the lawn. Make sure water doesn't wash over streets and sidewalks.
  • When washing the car, park it on the grass instead of in the driveway or use a commercial car wash.
  • Dispose of unused medication properly so it doesn't end up in the landfill.
