Micromobility devices are becoming more common in most cities, including Derby. They can provide fun and innovative ways to get around. Electric-assisted scooters, motorized skateboards, electric one-wheel boards, electric personal assistive mobility devices, hoverboards, self-balancing skateboards are examples of micromobility devices that may be used in Derby. 

The City Council adopted an ordinance on May 25, 2021 which regulates the operation of these devices to ensure safe operations and travel around the City. Below is a summary of some of the micromobility device rules. Riders are encouraged to review the regulations in their entirety if they have questions. 

Micromobility Device Rules of the Road

1. Ride safely and with care for others. 
2. When riding yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal before overtaking and passing pedestrians.
3. Ride on sidewalks, hike and bike paths or on-street bike lanes when possible. See more information on Derby's Hike & Bike Path system here. 
4. If you have to travel in the street it is only allowed on streets with speed limits of 30 mph or less and you should ride as near to the right side of the street as practical except when turning left. 
5. Do not ride more than two abreast and only ride with the amount of people the device is designed for. 
6. Have a white front light and red rear reflector or light on your device or on yourself if traveling when it is dark to enhance your visibility.
7. Devices are limited to a speed of 15 miles per hour or less.
8. Be sure not to park your device where it blocks pedestrian travel, curb ramps, disabled parking zones, benches, or traffic.
