Purple Heart City

On May 24, 2022, Mayor Randy White issued a proclamation declaring the 
City of Derby as a Purple Heart City inPurple Heart City recognition of the City's support of military personnel, veterans and families, and especially those who are recipients of the Purple Heart.

On Nov. 11, 2022, the City of Derby held a Purple Heart City celebration and sign unveiling at Warren Riverview Park. Special guests included John McCullough, Sons of the American Legion Chaplain; Mike Saindon, American Legion Family Post 408; Rep. Blake Carpenter, Kansas House of Representatives; Derby Mayor Randy White; Steve Tackett, American Legion Family Post 408 Commander; and Valentin Delgado, Commander of Military Order of the Purple Heart 558. 

The Purple Heart medal is presented to U.S. military service members who have been wounded or killed by enemy fire. It was originally awarded by George Washington in 1782 to recognize meritorious service in combat. It is the nation's oldest and one of the most distinguished military awards. 

The Derby community is home to many veterans and families, including Purple Heart recipients and Gold Star families. Derby also has strong ties with McConnell Air Force Base. The City of Derby has a long history of supporting military personnel and veterans.

The Purple Heart City designation is an official expression of Derby's appreciation for the sacrifices of Purple Heart recipients that were made in defending freedoms. 

This designation is jointly supported by the Military Order of the Purple Heart 558, American Legion Family Post 408 and the City of Derby. Becoming a Purple Heart City means the City of Derby will join the Purple Heart Trail, a national network of roads, bridges, highways and other monuments and trails honoring service members who have received the Purple Heart.
