City Council Redistricting

2023 Redistricting Ward Map

At the Dec. 13, 2022 City Council meeting, the City Council adopted an ordinance establishing new ward boundaries for City Council members.

Redistricting is the process of making revisions to Ward boundaries. This helps ensure each City Council Ward represents a similar number of residents.

Wards should be divided nearly as equal in population as possible. This analysis is based on the concept of “one man, one vote,” which applies to local governments through the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Nearly equal does not require absolute equality. Kansas courts have defined these terms to mean the population of each ward should ideally be within five percent of the average ward population. The total variation between the most and least populated wards should not exceed 10 percent, except in extraordinary circumstances.

Residents will continue to vote at the same polling location even if their Ward changed due to redistricting.
