On April 26, 2023, the Derby City Council approved an updated ordinance regarding the use of golf carts on residential streets citywide. The ordinance goes into effect on Wednesday, May 3. 

Here’s what the public needs to know about operating golf carts in the City:

• Golf carts can be driven on public streets with speed limits of 30 mph or less.
• Golf carts may only cross streets with speed limits over 30 mph, and must cross at signalized intersections on streets with speed limits of 40 mph or more. View the map.
• Golf carts are not allowed on sidewalks, hike and bike paths, trails or any other location normally used for pedestrian traffic unless designated as a golf cart path. 
• Golf carts are not allowed on private property without permission. 
• Operators must have a valid driver’s license. 
• The number of occupants allowed on a golf cart is limited to the number of factory-installed seats.
• If driven between sunset and sunrise, the cart must have lights and a properly mounted slow moving vehicle emblem.

If you own a golf cart, here are the steps to take to register it with the City:

• Register with the Derby Police Department. The registration process includes a $25 fee, completion of a form, and providing proof of liability insurance.
• Drop off your form, registration fee and proof of insurance at the Derby Police Department at 229 N. Baltimore Ave. (inside the front door to your left). You will receive a decal that must be displayed on the rear of the cart.
• Renew your registration every January.
